Event Type Descriptions

  1. Occasional Road Events  (say 6-8 per yea) where we set up a formal route, usually with a destination in mind, e.g. Holtsville Ecology Center, the beach, a favorite local ice cream shop, etc.  These events will take planning and coordination, i.e., the consideration of alternate routes/distances to accommodate all, provide rest stop refreshments, and steps to assure road safety.

  2. Mountain biking events at Rocky Point or one of the State Parks.

  3. Training events - these events will occur on a regular basis (1-2X per week) and will be tailored to those interested in gradual physical conditioning over the spring-summer-fall of this year.  These events will start with short rides and gradually increase in length throughout the season.  No significant planning here, just show up, ride, and reap the rewards of exercise.

  4. Challenge events and/or outside events, where those interested in the challenge of a longer ride, e.g., ride east and return by train, or entry in an event like Eastern Long Island Across-The-Forks Tour sponsored by an outside organization such as the Suffolk Bicycle Riders Association or the LI Bicycle Club, etc.

Ministry Task Descriptions

  1. Event Planning - an event planner is a member of the Ministry Council and functions in the capacity to develop biking events, including the suggestion of routes, development of cue sheets, and organization of the announcements about upcoming events.

  2. Rest Stop Coordinator - the rest stop coordinator will pick up bottled water and approved snacks, using ministry funds, before the event day. On the day of the event the coordinator(s) will locate at the predetermined stop point(s) and distribute water and snacks as necessary.

  3. Road Group Leader/Follower -  two people are needed for each road group to function as leaders and followers.  The leader will be familiar with the route and cognizant of all road safety and traffic rules so to lead the group through the designed route in a safe manner.

  4. Route Development, Road Evaluation, and Safety Approval - will assist in development of routes and will test ride the routes well in advance to the scheduled event so to assure the availability of proper and smooth road shoulders, assure that all intersections can be safely crossed, and give the council general feedback about the safety and condition of the route.

  5. Ministry Outreach and Advertising - will plan and organize ways of promoting our biking ministry to those outside the church.  Will develop flyers to advertise the same.  This task also carries the importance of gently introducing Jesus Chris and our church to the bike riders.

  6. Bicycle Repairers - to do minor bicycle repair.  The ministry is planning to repair bicycles for the members of the ministry on non-riding days. A charge for only the cost of parts for ministry members.  Repairers will also make minor adjustments, inflate tires, etc., on the ride days.

  7. Council Secretary - attends council meetings, records minutes, and assists with announcements, document preparation, and distribution.
